Talking The X-Files season 1

From its Fox Network debut on September 10, 1993, to its finale on May 19, 2002, the weekly 60-minute sci-fi drama The X-Files endeavored to prove that "the truth is out there." The series' title refers to those FBI files dealing with cases of paranormal and other otherwise unexplainable phenomena -- UFO sightings, alien abductions, genetic experimentation, possessions, telekinesis, and the like. Investigating the X-Files are agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Notorious within FBI circles as a maverick and iconoclast, the Oxford-educated Mulder made it his personal mission in life to prove that there were more things in Heaven and on Earth than were dreamt of in our philosophy. For him, it was very personal: his own sister had been abducted by extraterrestrials some 20 years earlier. His more skeptical partner, medical doctor Scully, was assigned to curb Mulder's more "fanciful" theories and to seek logical explanations to the phenomena at hand. (Ironically, in real life, actor David Duchovny doubted the existence of space aliens, while Gillian Anderson confessed to being a "true believer.") As the series progressed, Scully became more convinced that there were indeed paranormal forces beyond her ken; conversely, Mulder began to concede that Scully could be right once in a while, and tried to prove that humans, rather than aliens, were responsible for selected phenomena.

Each successive season of The X-Files ended with a cliffhanger, ranging from the murder of Mulder's information source "Deep Throat" (Jerry Hardin) to the birth of a mutant child who may or may not have belonged to one of the agents. No matter what happened, the physical evidence proving (or disproving) alien intervention invariably disappeared, and it was abundantly clear that there were those within the government who didn't want the truth to come out. Among the most obstreperous of Mulder and Scully's antagonists was a ubiquitous, obnoxious stranger (William B. Davis), known variously as "Cancer Man" and "Cigarette Smoking Man," and finally identified as one C.G.B. Spender. Other regulars and semi-regulars over the years have included Mitch Pileggi as Mulder and Scully's boss, Assistant FBI Director Walter Skinner; Steven Williams as Mr. X, another enigmatic information source; Nicholas Lea as Agent Alex Krycek; Mimi Rogers as Agent Diana Fowley; Chris Owens as Agent Jeffrey Spender; and Tom Braidwood as Melvin Frohike, a member of a government "conspiracy watchdog" group known as The Lone Gunman. One of the most popular series ever to emanate from Fox, The X-Files was also one of the longest-lasting science fiction series of all time, surpassed in longevity only by the endless Star Trek saga. In 1998, the series spawned a successful theatrical feature, also titled The X-Files, which tied up several loose plot ends from the series while establishing a whole new set of mysterious complications. The X-Files was created and executive-produced by Chris Carter. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

SEASON 1

Before the black oil, the Cigarette Smoking Man, and the threat of global alien colonization, there was just Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny) researching FBI cases with a paranormal bent in his basement office and Scully (Gillian Anderson), the skeptical agent with a degree in medicine and directions to debunk Mulder's findings. Thus, The X-Files: Season One is relatively devoid of the vast government conspiracy for which the series would become known, and serves mainly as an introduction to the show's two protagonists. Mulder, despite his reputation, is no kook; best in his class and well-known for his criminal profiling abilities, the rogue agent chose his path in hopes of finding his sister, Samantha, whom he witnessed -- or, at least, believes he witnessed -- being abducted by aliens. As eager as Mulder is to find an unearthly solution to his cases, Scully is equally determined to find an answer more consistent with the laws of science. Alone, both agents are somewhat blinded by their respective philosophies, but as partners they are able to complement one another nicely, and Scully's initial task is thrown to the wayside for a deep friendship and mutual respect that would test the boundaries of work, and ultimately the planet itself. EPISODE 1 - Pilot
A small town in the Pacific Northwest has been plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. The victims are all local high-school graduates of the class of 1989. Assigned to investigate this phenomenon are FBI agent Fox Mulder, whose recent job performance has been compromised by his ever-growing obsession with paranormal activities, and Mulder's new partner, medical doctor Dana Scully, who refuses to believe that "the truth is out there." Despite their prickly working relationship, it is clear that Mulder and Scully are destined to be a team from now on. Written by Chris Carter, the pilot episode of The X-Files originally aired September 10, 1993.

EPISODE 2 - Deep Throat
Mulder and Scully journey to Ellens Air Force Base in Idaho to investigate the disappearances of several army test pilots. The wife of one of the pilots suspects that something is amiss with the aircraft that her husband and the other missing men were assigned to test. Mulder discovers that the aircraft has been assembled from alien technology, culled from secretly captured UFOs. Despite Scully's skepticism, Mulder is determined to get to the bottom of "Project Aurora." First telecast September 17, 1993.

EPISODE 3 - Squeeze
An old-fashioned "locked-door mystery" is at the base of this X-Files episode. Tipped off by a fellow FBI agent, Scully investigates a series of murders in which the victims' livers were torn from their bodies. The most perplexing aspect of the case is that all the killings were committed inside otherwise impenetrable rooms. Mulder comes to the conclusion that the culprit is a serial killer -- who has been active since 1903, and who commits five murders every 30 years. Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, "Squeeze" was originally telecast September 24, 1993.

EPISODE 4 - Conduit
Not long after the disappearance of his teenage sister during a family camping trip, a young boy begins to draw strange and inexplicable shapes. Despite Scully's insistence that there is a logical explanation, Mulder is convinced that the boy's sister was a victim of alien abduction, and that the child's doodles provide the key to the aliens' identity. For Mulder, the case is personal: his own sister mysteriously vanished in a similar manner years before. Written by Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon, "Conduit" was first broadcast October 1, 1993.

EPISODE 5 - The Jersey Devil
Mulder and Scully are assigned to investigate a savage murder in the outskirts of Atlantic City. All evidence suggests that the killer is the Jersey Devil, a legendary "Sasquatch" who has supposedly roamed the New Jersey countryside for four decades. Naturally, Scully is convinced that a human killer is responsible, but Mulder will not be dissuaded -- after all, the victim was not only killed, but nearly devoured. First telecast October 8, 1993.

EPISODE 6 - Shadows
Once again, it's up to Mulder and Scully to solve a series of baffling deaths. The most recent victims are a pair of Iranian terrorists, who had apparently planned to assassinate a young woman named Lauren Kite (Lisa Waltz), an employee of an industrial technology firm. As the case progresses, Mulder comes to the conclusion that the killer is a ghost who has vowed to protect Lauren from harm. Originally broadcast October 22, 1993.

EPISODE 7 - Ghost in the Machine
First telecast October 29, 1993, this X-Files episode is appropriately set during Halloween. At the request of Scully's former partner, she and Mulder probe into the murder of prominent corporate executive Benjamin Drake. The victim was the head of Eurisko, a high-profile computer-manufacturing firm. As usual, Scully assumes that the killer was a human being, but Mulder is obsessed with the notion that this is a case of "murder by computer" -- and that there are more murders to come. "Ghost in the Machine" was written by Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon.

EPISODE 8 - Ice
Mulder and Scully journey to Alaska to find out why a group of scientists at an Arctic research station has apparently cut off all communication with the outside world. For this assignment, the two agents are teamed with a geologist, a toxicologist, and a physician. Upon their arrival, Mulder, Scully, and their cohorts are targeted for extinction by a highly intelligent -- and very, very old -- parasite. Written by James Wong and Glen Morgan, "Ice" was originally telecast November 5, 1993.

EPISODE 9 - Space
Mulder is approached by a NASA agent who has photographic evidence that a recently aborted space-shuttle mission was sabotaged. The photo indicates that the shuttle was damaged in a manner that could only have been perpetrated by a super-strong space alien. Over Scully's protests, Mulder pursues the theory that the culprit is an extraterrestrial spirit currently inhabiting the body of an otherwise above-suspicion astronaut. First broadcast November 12, 1993.

EPISODE 10 - Fallen Angel
Insisting upon investigating the crash of a UFO in rural Wisconsin, Mulder faces expulsion from the FBI, which is currently conducting its own investigation under the cover of cleaning up a chemical spill. Ultimately, Mulder is arrested and placed in Scully's custody. Against her better judgment, Scully allows Mulder to continue his investigation -- with the usual startling results. Written by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, "Fallen Angel" was first broadcast November 19, 1993.

EPISODE 11 - Eve
Two murders, committed in an identical fashion, occur simultaneously on opposite sides of the American continent. At the same time, the young daughters of the two murder victims inexplicably vanish. Assigned to investigate, Mulder and Scully stumble upon evidence of an ill-fated eugenics experiment. The key to the mystery is the word "exsanguinate" -- spoken by an eight-year-old child. Originally telecast December 10, 1993, "Eve" was written by Kenneth Biller and Chris Brancato.

EPISODE 12 - Fire
Scotland Yard detective Phoebe Greene (Amanda Pays) is assigned to guard a prominent member of the British aristocracy after two of his peers are killed in highly suspicious fires. FBI agents Mulder and Scully become involved in the case when Phoebe, an old sweetheart of Mulder's from his Oxford days, solicits his aid. The two agents begin tracking a most unusual arsonist, while Scully does a little "burning" of her own as she jealously watches Mulder and Phoebe rekindle their relationship. Written by X-Files creator Chris Carter, "Fire" first aired December 17, 1993.

EPISODE 13 - Beyond the Sea
Grieving over her father's sudden death, Scully nonetheless begins investigating a series of abductions and killings. Each murder is predicted by Luther Lee Boggs (Brad Dourif), a Death Row inmate. As Mulder hastens to rescue a kidnapped couple by following the clues provided by Boggs, Scully hopes that the condemned man will be able to contact the spirit of her recently deceased father (Don S. Davis). Originally telecast January 7, 1994, "Beyond the Sea" was written by Glen Morgan and James Wong.

EPISODE 14 - Genderbender
Several male and female frequenters of singles bars are murdered by an elusive serial killer. Investigating, Mulder and Scully unearth a number of highly contradictory clues. The trail of evidence leads to an isolated religious sect known as The Kindred -- and the seemingly inescapable conclusion that the murderer is a sect member who is able to change genders from male to female and back again. Written by Larry Barber and Paul Barber, "Genderbender" (sometimes listed as "Gender Bender") was first broadcast January 21, 1994.

EPISODE 15 - Lazarus
Declared clinically dead, Jack Willis (Christopher Allport), Scully's former boyfriend and a fellow FBI agent, is revived on the operating table. While in a state of limbo, Willis' consciousness was taken over by the bank robber whom he has just killed in a shoot-out. As is often the case, Scully refuses to believe that this metamorphosis has taken place, but Mulder is convinced that Jack Willis is no longer the real Jack Willis. "Lazarus" was written by Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon. The episode first aired February 4, 1994.

EPISODE 16 - Young at Heart
Mulder is certain that a recent murder was committed by hardened criminal John Barnett (Alan Boyce), whom he helped convict years earlier. Scully is not so certain of this, inasmuch as Barnett has been dead for a long, long time. Investigating, the two agents uncover evidence of a well-intentioned, but ultimately disastrous, anti-aging experiment. First broadcast February 11, 1994, "Young at Heart" was written by Scott Kaufer.

EPISODE 17 - E.B.E.
The initials in the title of this X-Files episode refer to an "Extraterrestrial Biological Entity." Such an entity seems to have been the catalyst for the false information given to Mulder and Scully pertaining to a recent close encounter with a UFO. With the help of a government watchdog group called "The Lone Gunman" (Bruce Harwood, Dean Haglund, and Tom Braidwood), the two agents are able to get to the truth of the matter -- or are they? Written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, "E.B.E." was originally telecast on February 18, 1994.

EPISODE 18 - Miracle Man
The title character in this X-Files episode of March 18, 1994, is a Tennessee teenager named Samuel (Scott Bairstow), who apparently possesses the ability to heal with the touch of his hand. Unfortunately, it appears as though Samuel also has the capacity to kill with his magic touch. As Mulder and Scully investigate the faith-healing ministry spearheaded by Samuel's adopted father (George Gerdes), the boy becomes convinced that his lack of faith has brought about the present wave of tragedy. "Miracle Man" was written by Howard Gordon and Chris Carter.

EPISODE 19 - Shapes
Mulder and Scully travel to a Montana Indian reservation to investigate the shooting death of a Native American. The killer is a local rancher, who insists that he was shooting at a wolf-like creature that was attacking his son. While Scully conducts a traditional investigation, Mulder seeks out a paranormal explanation for the Indian's death -- and in so doing unearths the oldest X-File on record, pertaining to a "mythical" evil spirit known as a Manitou. Written by Marilyn Osborne, "Shapes" first aired April 1, 1994.

EPISODE 20 - Darkness Falls
"Darkness Falls" is set in a Washington State logging camp, where 30 loggers have mysteriously vanished. Investigating, Mulder and Scully are teamed with local forest ranger Larry Moore (Jason Beghe), who is convinced that the disappearances are the handiwork of a militant band of ecological terrorists. But the two agents learn that a different group of culprits are responsible: a swarm of ancient insects who are hypersensitive to sunlight. Originally telecast April 15, 1994.

EPISODE 21 - Tooms
Mulder is dismayed when serial killer Eugene Tooms (Doug Hutchison), whom he'd sent to prison, is released on parole. It is Mulder's contention that not only will Tooms kill again, but that the ex-convict is a mutant who has been committing murders for nearly 100 years. Against the orders of his superiors, Mulder sets up a 24-hour surveillance of Tooms -- and, of course, he is nearly victimized by the killer's latest murder spree. A follow-up to the first-season episode "Squeeze," "Tooms" was written by Glen Morgan and James Wong. It first aired April 22, 1994.

EPISODE 22 - Born Again
A series of unrelated but very unusual murders is investigated by Mulder, Scully, and detective Sharon Lazard (Maggie Wheeler) of the Buffalo, NY, police force. All evidence seems to point to the "fact" that the killings were committed by Michelle Bishop (Andrea Libman) -- an eight-year-old girl. Characteristically looking beyond the obvious, Mulder discovers that Michelle is the reincarnation of a murdered police officer who intends to wreak vengeance upon all those who wronged him. Originally telecast April 29, 1994, "Born Again" was written by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa.

EPISODE 23 - Roland
A pair of top aeronautical scientists, both working on a revolutionary high-speed fuel engine, are murdered in a grotesque fashion. Suspicion falls upon Roland Fuller (Zeljko Ivanek), a mentally retarded janitor at the scientists' think tank. Refusing to jump to conclusions, Mulder and Scully discover a startling secret in Roland's family tree. Written by Chris Ruppenthal, "Roland" made its X-Files debut on May 6, 1994.

EPISODE 24 - The Erlenmeyer Flask
Establishing a tradition for all future season-ending episodes, The X-Files closed out its first season on May 13, 1994, with a wealth of surprise twists and unresolved subplots. Acting upon a tip from Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin), Mulder and Scully investigate the possibility that the government is conducting secret experiments involving alien DNA injections. As a result, the two agents find themselves hunted down like animals by mysterious "Men in Black." As the episode draws to a close, the future of the entire X-Files project is placed in dire jeopardy. "The Erlenmeyer Flask" was written by series creator Chris Carter.
